Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, Tanzania

TANZANIA staged the first ever Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition (YSTE) in Dar es Salaam which was also part of celebrations to mark 50 years of the country's independence.

The exhibition started this week and will be held at Mlimani Conference Centre and is the brainchild of Young Scientists Tanzania (YST) and will draw students from various schools.

Young Scientists Tanzania (YST) is a concept that grew out of the work of the Combat Diseases of Poverty Consortium (CDPC) whereby African researchers and scientists on training programmes in Ireland were exposed to the development education work of the CDPC and its engagement with the BT sponsored Irish Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.

The main objectives of the YST are the promotion and popularisation of science and technology; linking science and technology to active citizenship and the fight against poverty; and improving the teaching of the sciences.

The aim of the exhibition is to encourage students and young people in general to be innovative by promoting science and technology in Tanzania specifically to generate greater interest and awareness among young people. It is also intended to strengthen the linkage between science and technology and development and to improve teaching and research in sciences at all levels

It is hoped that support for this project will result in active engagement of young Tanzanian students in the search for practical solutions to the problems that hinder development.

Following the exhibition, a thorough evaluation of the project will be undertaken by YST, together with external partners, sponsors and two independent consultants to identify constraints to the success of the project and develop a clear plan and work programme for 2012 to 2013.
