CDPC research training - current round complete

The CDPC offers short-term (generally three-month) research training positions in the biological or social sciences, anthropology or the bio-industry sector. During our next call, we would welcome applications from East African individuals who wish to train in Ireland as well as Irish applicants who wish to train in East Africa.

Successful East African applicants will be hosted at NUI Maynooth or one of our partner institutes, including:

  • Trinity College Dublin
  • Kimmage Development Studies Centre
  • James’ Hospital

East African trainees may also be hosted by one of our private sector partners, including:

  • Biotrin Healthcare
  • GeneMedix
  • Tridelta Development
  • Enfer Group

Successful Irish applicants will be hosted by one of the following partner institutes in East Africa:

  • Makerere University (Uganda)
  • University of Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania)
  • Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (Tanzania)
  • MS Training Centre for Development Cooperation (Tanzania)
  • Egerton University (Kenya)
  • Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kenya)
  • Univeristy of Nairobi (Kenya)
  • Tropical Diseases Research Centre (Zambia)

Training overview

The purpose of the training is to provide applicants with advanced skills and knowledge that can be applied to their research and contribute to their own teaching and training programmes in the applicant's home country. The Consortium will tailor the training to the specific requirements of applicants and provide access to graduate level courses and specific technologies and expertise as required. Trainees will in turn be required to contribute their expertise to classes and seminars for Irish students undertaking courses on development issues. In addition, trainees will liaise with the Education Officer of the Consortium to contribute to the secondary school outreach programme. Following the training, applicants will be required to submit a report. Follow-up evaluations of how the training has contributed to the candidate’s own research and teaching will be undertaken.

These positions cover:

Irish trainees: a round trip economy ticket to East Africa, local accommodation and a stipend to cover living costs.

East African trainees: a round trip economy ticket to Ireland, accommodation at the university, a stipend to cover living costs, use of a dedicated laptop computer and mobile phone.

Application procedures:

  1. All applicants must download and complete the training form which is available as a Word document. 
  2. Applicants must clearly fill in all sections of the form (please ensure to sign and date the end of the form) and send together with a recent CV to the address below. Alternatively, applications/CVs may be emailed to cdpc.office@nuim.ie, but if this is your chosen method of correspondance please ensure to remember to send a signed copy of the form to the office.
  3. Applicants should identify a CDPC partner to support their application. Contact details of CDPC partners are available here. Once a suitable CDPC partner has been established, please ask the individual to fill out the CDPC referee form and send this to cdpc.office@nuim.ie.
  4. The Training Committee meets on a quarterly basis; you will be contacted with details as to the success of your application within two working days of the meeting.

*IMPORTANT NOTES*

  • East African applicants must choose training dates which are at least 3-4 months after the date you intend to apply. It will take a number of weeks to assess and approve applications (if successful), and once accepted, obtaining an Irish visa can take up to 8 weeks.
